The story of the Maison.

Since 1904, a family craft has been passed down, transformed, and today finds new expression. From the rice fields of Lombardie to the workshops of Montreuil, eight chapters trace the thread of a single hand, that of a family who made precision an art, and memory a material.

Why this story matters

Before being a confectionery house, Maison Ratti is a story of transmission: of machines, of gestures, of journeys, of workshops, and of a family who has never broken the thread.

The origins, near Lake Garda

Birth of Feruccio, known as Jean Ratti, in Lombardy. The tenth of twelve children, his parents were landowners, tied to the rice fields of the Po plain, near Lake Garda. In this still-rural Northern Italy, one learns early the meaning of effort and the patience of the seasons. These two inheritances, the land and long time, would stay with Feruccio his whole life, and later infuse every gesture in the workshop.

The departure

The family leaves Italy after Garibaldi comes to power. The children set off for Switzerland, dreaming of America. Feruccio joins a Swiss chocolate maker and reveals his talent for confectionery. There he discovers a new discipline: sugar worked hot, cooking watched to the exact degree, moulds carefully aligned. The American dream fades, a trade takes shape.

Paris, and a decision

The chocolate maker sends him to Paris. There Feruccio becomes a naturalised Frenchman and decides to set out on his own. Paris, at the dawn of the twentieth century, is the capital of taste and fine industry. Feruccio, now Jean, sees it as the place where his trade can become a house. He chooses to stop working for others, and to build his own.

Jean Ratti Établissements

Founding of Établissements Jean Ratti in Paris: a manufacturer of specialised machines for confectionery. The House's oval emblem is born in this period, a quiet mark between past and present. Very soon, Jean Ratti machines equip confectioners in Paris and well beyond: wrapping machines, moulding machines, dosing machines. The company does not yet make the sweets itself, it makes the tools that bring them to life. At the Foire de Paris, its stands win awards as early as 1907.

Paris, puis Rome

The machines

The gestures, the precision

Two machines sum up the House's craftsmanship. The P15 wrapping machine, a historic best-seller, and the P50, rarer and more complex. Each embodies the same obsession: the regularity of a gesture, repeated thousands of times without ever faltering.

Feruccio passes away. His sons René and Mario take over the house. The two brothers share the running of the business without changing its spirit. The machines evolve, the clientele grows, but the signature endures, that exacting attention to detail inherited from their father.

Patrice Ratti

Patrice Ratti, maternal grandfather of Arthur and Tom, continues the family business of confectionery machinery. Under Patrice Ratti, the company crosses the decades without breaking from its original trade. It is he who passes on to his grandsons a taste for things well made and the intact memory of a name.

Maison Ratti

The two brothers, fourth generation, launch Maison Ratti: a confectionery brand in its own right. The story that began with machines finds a new form, that of the sweet itself. Same values, new material: where machines were once made, the sweet is now shaped. Translucent boiled sweets, caramelised pralines, lollipops poured in the confectioner's tradition, each piece carries, in its grain, one hundred and twenty years of workshop craft.
